Lamborghini Sets Miura Record, Then Steals Its Own Thunder With 1,000-HP Revuelto SV

Lamborghini Sets Miura Record, Then Steals Its Own Thunder With 1,000-HP Revuelto SV

Lamborghini didn't gather every Miura ever built last weekend, but it came closer than anyone has before. The company marked the 60th anniversary of the car now widely considered the original supercar, and 43 examples lined up on the third fairway at Pebble Beach for a family reunion.

That gathering wasn't the only tribute to the model that cemented Lamborghini's legacy. The brand also brought two cars with over 1,000 horsepower: the Miura 60° Homage and the Revuelto SV.

The Miura went into production late in 1966, after debuting at the Geneva Motor Show earlier that year. It wasn't Lamborghini's first or second car, and it may not even be the prettiest the company has built. But compared with the Lamborghini GT and anything else on sale in 1966, the Miura was the future.

With a mid-mounted V12 and a striking Bertone design, many call it the first supercar. Over seven years, Lamborghini built roughly 860 Miuras across all variants. What happened to most of them is unknown, though one was famously pushed off an Alpine cliff by a bulldozer. Getting 43 together now is impressive.

The largest Miura gathering ever took a road trip around Monterey before landing on the Pebble Beach Golf Links during Monterey Car Week, where they sat as a rainbow of Italian design for showgoers to admire.

The Revuelto Miura 60° Homage is the more exclusive of the two new models. It comes in nine colors matching the original car's shades, with gold accents and stripes. Only 99 units are planned, which could spark a scramble among collectors to own a matching set. The second car, the Revuelto SV, packs 1,065 horsepower, making it the most powerful road car Lamborghini has ever built.

It's hard to ignore the SV's aggression, even with dozens of Miuras nearby. The SV will be far more common, with 1,963 units planned, a nod to the year Lamborghini was founded, not the year the first SV appeared. The original Miura SV, with 380 horsepower, debuted in 1971, 55 years ago.

Why this matters: Today's Lamborghini is all about extremes, even its Urus SUV. The original Miura started that trend. Though Lamborghini has tried more conventional sports cars over the years, models like the Espada are largely forgotten next to the Countach and Diablo. It's smart for the company to celebrate its roots with owners like these, especially if it means a specially built villa on site to wine, dine, and possibly secure orders for new models.
