Kia’s Telluride Repair Didn’t Work - Now They’re Doing a Second Recall

Kia is facing an unusual problem: a recall that didn’t actually fix the issue. The automaker is now recalling nearly 47,000 Telluride SUVs from the 2020 and 2021 model years after its original repair failed to prevent engine compartment fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem involves a short circuit in the vehicle’s front electrical junction box, which can overheat even after the first recall was performed.
The original recall, issued last year, involved installing a new fuse and updating software. But Kia discovered that the fix wasn’t enough, some Tellurides were still at risk of catching fire while driving or parked. Under this new recall, dealers will replace the entire junction box assembly and install an upgraded fuse.
Kia says it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the defect, but owners should take the issue seriously.
