KIA Urges Owners to Park Outside After Recall of Nearly Half a Million Vehicles

KIA has issued a sweeping recall affecting roughly 460,000 vehicles, warning owners to park them outdoors due to a fire risk. The automaker says a problem with the vehicles’ electrical system could cause fires even when the engine is off. The recall covers several popular models, including certain Sportage and Seltos SUVs from the 2020 through 2024 model years, as well as some Soul hatchbacks.
According to KIA, the issue stems from a faulty fuse in the electronic control unit. Under certain conditions, the fuse can overheat and catch fire. While no injuries have been reported, the company has confirmed several thermal incidents. Owners are advised to park away from structures or other vehicles until repairs are completed, which will involve replacing the fuse and updating the control unit software at no cost.
This isn’t the first time KIA has faced fire-related recalls. The company has struggled with similar problems in recent years, drawing scrutiny from federal safety regulators. For affected owners, KIA says it will begin notifying them by mail starting next month. In the meantime, anyone with questions can check their vehicle identification number on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website or contact a local KIA dealer.
The repair process is expected to take about an hour.
