Kia Telluride Recall Expands: Over 400,000 SUVs Flagged for Fire Hazard - Again

Kia is recalling more than 400,000 Telluride SUVs for a potential fire risk, marking the second major safety action for the popular model in recent years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports the issue stems from a faulty front seat motor that can overheat, even when the vehicle is off and parked.
Owners are urged to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.
The recall covers certain 2020 through 2024 Tellurides, including those previously fixed under an earlier recall for a similar problem. Kia says the new defect involves a slide actuator in the power-adjustable seats. If the motor jams, it can draw excessive current and cause an electrical short, leading to a fire.
Dealers will install a new fuse and bracket assembly free of charge, and Kia is also adding a software update to monitor the motor's temperature.
This isn't the first time the Telluride has faced scrutiny. In 2023, Kia recalled nearly 200,000 of the SUVs for a separate fire risk tied to the trailer hitch module. While no injuries have been reported in connection with this latest issue, the company has documented at least six thermal incidents.
Kia will begin notifying affected owners by mail starting next month. For now, if you own a Telluride, check your VIN on the NHTSA site and keep it parked outside until you get the fix.
