Kia Telluride Recall: 462,000 SUVs Face Fire Risk - Here’s What Owners Need to Know

Kia is recalling nearly 462,000 Telluride SUVs after discovering a problem that could cause a fire, even when the engine is off. The issue involves a faulty front motor assembly that can overheat and ignite, prompting the automaker to urge owners to park outside and away from structures until repairs are made.

The recall covers 2020 through 2024 model year Tellurides.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from a manufacturing defect in the front motor’s power relay. In certain conditions, the relay can short-circuit, leading to overheating and potential fire. Kia has received reports of at least one fire and several incidents of melting, though no injuries or crashes have been linked to the defect so far.

Owners can expect to receive notification letters starting in late March. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front motor assembly free of charge. In the meantime, Kia recommends parking the SUV outside and not leaving it in a garage or near flammable materials. If you own a Telluride, check your vehicle identification number on Kia’s recall site or the NHTSA portal to see if your SUV is included.
