Kia Telluride Recall: 460,000 SUVs at Risk of Fire Under the Seat

Kia Telluride Recall: 460,000 SUVs at Risk of Fire Under the Seat

Kia is urging owners of over 460,000 Telluride SUVs to park outdoors and watch for smoke or burning smells beneath the front seats. The recall, announced by federal regulators, stems from a potential electrical short in the power seat motors that can spark a fire, even while the vehicle is off and parked.

The problem affects 2020 through 2024 model year Tellurides. Kia says the issue is linked to a faulty seat slide knob that can jam, putting pressure on the seat motor wiring. Over time, that pressure may cause a short circuit, leading to smoke or flames. No crashes or injuries have been reported, but the company has confirmed at least one fire and several thermal incidents.

Owners will get free repairs starting in late April. Dealers will install a reinforced bracket and a new seat slide knob to prevent the jam. Until then, Kia recommends parking outside and away from structures. If you smell smoke or see anything unusual under the seat, do not drive the vehicle and contact a dealer immediately.

This is the second major Telluride recall in recent months, following a separate issue with trailer hitch fires. Owners can check if their SUV is affected by entering the VIN on Kia’s recall website or calling the NHTSA hotline.
