Kia Sorento Hybrid vs. Toyota Highlander Hybrid: Which SUV Saves You More Over Five Years?

Kia Sorento Hybrid vs. Toyota Highlander Hybrid: Which SUV Saves You More Over Five Years?

On paper, the 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid looks like the obvious winner for anyone watching their wallet. It starts at $38,890, a full $9,130 less than the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. You get 227 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque, and up to 37 mpg in front-wheel drive. Compare that to the Highlander’s 243 horsepower, 175 lb-ft, and 35 mpg, and the math is simple: you’re paying less per horsepower and getting better fuel economy out of the gate.

For buyers who want to drive off the lot with more cash in hand, the Sorento is the clear pick.

But the story shifts when you look past the first day. Toyota’s reputation for slow depreciation and long-term reliability starts to matter after a few years. A 2021 Highlander Hybrid retained 77% of its value after five years, while the Sorento Hybrid held only 63%. Annual maintenance runs about $44 less for the Toyota, and JD Power’s five-year quality average favors the Highlander 82 out of 100 versus the Sorento’s 77.

The Highlander also offers more cargo space (84 cubic feet vs. 3 seconds vs. 6). Those differences are modest, but they add up over time.

When you tally total five-year ownership costs, including depreciation, fuel, maintenance, and insurance, the Toyota actually comes out $1,084 cheaper to keep on the road. But here’s the catch: that still leaves the Sorento with an $8,046 advantage after factoring in the initial price gap.

Spread over five years, that’s about $1,609 in savings per year. Gas savings are minimal, the front-drive Sorento saves about $100 annually, and the Sorento has one recall on file for instrument panel software, while the Highlander has none. Still, for most buyers, the Kia’s lower upfront cost and solid efficiency make it the smarter financial choice, at least through the first half-decade.

Your actual results will depend on trim level, financing, and driving habits, but the data points clearly to the Sorento as the better deal for now.
