Kia Recalls Nearly Half a Million Vehicles in U.S. Over Engine Fire Concerns

Kia is calling back roughly 463,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential fire risk, according to federal safety regulators. The recall affects several popular models, including certain Sportage SUVs and sedans, where a manufacturing defect could cause an engine compartment fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off.
Owners are being urged to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are complete.
The issue stems from a faulty component in the vehicle's anti-lock brake system that may short-circuit, leading to excessive current and a possible fire. Kia has not reported any crashes, injuries, or deaths linked to the defect, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has logged multiple consumer complaints and engine compartment fires.
Dealers will inspect and replace the affected fuse module free of charge.
This is the latest in a series of large-scale recalls for Kia and its affiliate Hyundai, both of which have faced scrutiny over engine fire risks in recent years. The recall comes as automakers grapple with rising warranty costs and regulatory pressure. Kia says it will begin notifying owners by mail starting next month, with repair parts expected to be available shortly after.
In the meantime, drivers are advised to pay attention to warning lights or unusual smells and to contact their local dealer immediately.
