Kia Recall: 20,500 Vehicles at Risk of Fire. Owners Advised to Park Outside

Kia has issued a recall affecting roughly 20,500 vehicles in Canada, warning owners to park them away from buildings due to a potential fire risk. The recall targets certain models where an electrical issue in the antilock brake system could cause a short circuit, even when the car is turned off.

The affected vehicles include select 2011 through 2014 Optima sedans and 2012 through 2014 Sorento SUVs, as well as some 2010 through 2013 Sportage models. Kia says the problem stems from a faulty brake-system control module that can overheat. While no injuries have been reported in Canada, the company is urging drivers to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.

Dealers will replace the fuse and, in some cases, the entire brake-control module at no cost. Kia plans to notify owners by mail starting mid-January, and parts are expected to be available by February. In the meantime, owners can check their vehicle identification number on Kia's recall site or contact Transport Canada for details.

If you own one of these models, it’s best to park on the street and avoid garages or carports until the fix is applied.
