Kia Carnival Hybrid: A Family MPV That Blends Efficiency and Space

Family minivans are becoming a rare sight in 2026, with SUVs and crossovers dominating the market. For buyers who need seating for seven or eight and want good fuel economy without a high price, the Kia Carnival Hybrid stands out as a practical option.

The Carnival has been a strong player in the minivan segment since the Sedona arrived in the US in 2002. It was renamed Carnival in 2022 and received a major facelift for the 2025 model year, which introduced its first hybrid powertrain and updated styling. According to CarBuzz, the Carnival's design often draws comments that it "does not look like a minivan," thanks to its SUV-like appearance until the sliding doors are spotted.

For the 2027 model year, the Carnival Hybrid is offered in four trims: LXS at $41,490, EX at $43,690, SX at $48,590, and SX Prestige at $53,590. All prices exclude destination fees. The LXS comes standard with eight seats, power sliding doors, keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

3-inch displays, a Bose sound system, and a head-up display.

6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 242 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. It achieves 34 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined, making it one of the most efficient MPVs available, just behind the Toyota Sienna's 35 combined mpg.

The EPA estimates annual fuel costs of $1,850 for the hybrid, compared to $2,950 for the V6 version, saving about $1,750 over five years versus an average new vehicle.

Cargo space is a major advantage for the Carnival. 1 cubic feet of space behind the first row, beating the Sienna's 101 cubic feet. It also has more room behind the second and third rows. However, passenger space is a trade-off. 6 inches. 1 inches more in the back.

The Carnival also comes in an 11-seater version with four rows, but that model is only available in select markets like South Korea. For US buyers, the Carnival and Telluride are the current eight-seat options from Kia.
