Worn Tie Rods Can Affect Vehicle Steering

Worn Tie Rods Can Affect Vehicle Steering

Tie rods, a component of a vehicle's steering system, can last between 50,000 to 100,000 miles, but their lifespan can be impacted by driving habits and road conditions. Vehicles from various manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, VW, Volvo, Jaguar, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda, can be affected.

Signs of worn tie rods include loose or disconnected steering, a shaking or vibrating steering wheel, and uneven tire wear. Unusual noises, such as knocking or grinding sounds from the front of the vehicle when turning the steering wheel, can also indicate worn tie rods. Replacing tie rods can cost between $100 and $400 for parts, plus labor costs.

It is often recommended to replace them in pairs to ensure even wear and tear. An alignment check is also recommended after replacement to prevent excessive tire wear and poor handling. Vehicle owners who notice these symptoms should have their tie rods checked by a mechanic to assess their condition and recommend necessary repairs.
