Infiniti Puts the Brakes on Its 600-HP Luxury SUV - Here’s Why

Infiniti is hitting pause on its most anticipated model yet: a high-performance version of the QX80 that was expected to go head-to-head with the Cadillac Escalade-V. The Japanese automaker confirmed this week that the souped-up SUV, which packs a rumored 600 horsepower under the hood, isn't ready for prime time.

Company executives say the delay is intentional, insisting the extra time will ensure the vehicle lives up to the hype.

The decision comes as a surprise to industry watchers who expected Infiniti to strike while the iron was hot in the luxury SUV segment. The Escalade-V has been a runaway success for Cadillac, proving there’s a hungry market for big, brash, and brutally fast family haulers. Infiniti’s answer was supposed to be a sportier, more aggressive QX80, one that could match the V’s muscle while offering the brand’s signature refinement.

But according to insiders, engineering challenges and a desire to get the powertrain absolutely right have pushed the timeline back.

“We want this vehicle to be worth the wait,” a spokesperson told us, adding that the company is focused on delivering a driving experience that feels both effortless and exhilarating. That means fine-tuning the twin-turbo V6, sorting out the suspension for a balance of comfort and cornering grip, and ensuring the cabin matches the performance with premium materials and tech.

For now, Infiniti isn’t saying when the big SUV will actually arrive, only that it will be worth holding out for. In the meantime, the standard QX80 soldiers on, but the clock is ticking.
