Hyundai Tucson vs. Santa Fe: Which SUV Actually Fits Your Life Better?

Hyundai’s got a good problem on its hands. Its two midsize SUVs—the Tucson and the larger Santa Fe—are both strong players in a segment that’s still hot with families. Bold styling, generous standard features, and top safety scores make both tough to ignore. But with about $5,000 separating their starting prices, the question isn’t just about cost.
It’s about what you actually need. We dug into the specs and drove both to help you decide.
Let’s start with space. The Santa Fe is the clear winner if you’re hauling people or gear. It seats seven, offers nearly 167 cubic feet of interior volume, and can tow up to 4,500 pounds with trailer brakes. The Tucson maxes out at five seats and 147 cubic feet. But if you don’t need that third row, the Tucson’s hybrid models deliver a much better driving experience.
The base gas-only Tucson feels sluggish, but the hybrid (231 hp, 38 mpg combined) is responsive and efficient. 5-liter four-cylinder makes 277 hp, but its hybrid version (36 mpg combined) can’t match the Tucson’s fuel economy. And if you want a plug-in hybrid, only the Tucson offers one—good for 77 MPGe combined.
On equipment, both entry-level trims come well stocked with wireless Apple CarPlay, keyless entry, and Hyundai’s Bluelink+ app. The Santa Fe SE adds niceties like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear privacy glass, and a rear-seat quiet mode. Step up to the Santa Fe Calligraphy, and you get captain’s chairs, a head-up display, heated rear seats, and a 12-speaker Bose system.
For most buyers, though, the real value lies in the Santa Fe’s bigger, more powerful package. The base Santa FE SE starts at $35,050—about $5,600 more than the Tucson SE—but you get a turbo engine, more space, and better standard amenities. If that’s too much SUV, the Tucson Hybrid Blue SE ($32,450) is a smart compromise.
Either way, you’re getting a lot of SUV for the money.
