Hyundai Recalls 48,000 Kona SUVs Over Rear Seatbelt Malfunction

Hyundai has issued a recall for nearly 48,000 Kona SUVs after discovering a rear seatbelt defect that could prevent the belts from latching properly. The recall affects certain 2024 and 2025 model year vehicles, according to federal safety regulators.
The problem stems from a manufacturing issue with the rear seatbelt buckle assembly. In affected vehicles, the buckle may not fully engage when the belt is inserted, creating a risk that the seatbelt could come undone during a crash. This increases the chance of injury for rear-seat passengers.
Hyundai said it has received no reports of crashes or injuries linked to the defect so far.
Owners will be notified by mail starting next month, and dealers will inspect and replace the faulty buckle assemblies free of charge. Hyundai encourages anyone with questions to check their vehicle identification number on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall site or contact their local dealer.
The recall underscores the importance of checking seatbelt function regularly, especially for families who often rely on rear seats for children.
