Hyundai Commits to Full Battery Replacement in Six-Car IONIQ 5 Recall

Hyundai Commits to Full Battery Replacement in Six-Car IONIQ 5 Recall

Hyundai has confirmed to Torque News that it will replace every battery pack in the six affected IONIQ 5 electric vehicles currently under recall. The move goes beyond a typical software patch or module fix, addressing the root cause directly. The automaker says the decision was made after a thorough investigation into the potential defect, which could pose a fire risk in rare circumstances.

The recall, announced earlier this month, covers a small number of 2022-2023 IONIQ 5 models built at Hyundai’s Ulsan plant. Hyundai officials stressed that the issue is not widespread, but the company is taking no chances. Rather than attempting to isolate and repair individual battery cells, the entire pack will be swapped out free of charge for each of the six owners affected.

Dealers have already been notified and are contacting customers to schedule the replacements.

This approach marks a significant step in EV recall strategy. Battery packs are the most expensive component in an electric car, and replacing them outright signals Hyundai’s commitment to safety and customer trust. The company also noted that no fires or injuries have been reported related to this defect.

Owners can continue driving their vehicles, but are advised to park outdoors and away from structures until the new pack is installed. Hyundai expects all six repairs to be completed within weeks.
