Hyundai and Kia’s 10-Year Warranty Isn’t Just Peace of Mind Anymore - It’s a Bragging Right

For years, the internet’s go-to move when Hyundai or Kia came up was to pile on with outdated claims about poor quality. The Korean automakers fought back by rolling out the industry’s longest warranties: 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain, plus a 5-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper plan.
That coverage is nearly double what most rivals, including Honda. Toyota, and Subaru, offer. D. Power’s latest studies, Hyundai and Kia no longer need that warranty as a crutch. Their initial quality and three-year dependability now beat the industry average, making that long warranty less of a safety net and more of a flex.
The 2025 Initial Quality Study shows Hyundai at 173 problems per 100 vehicles and Kia at 181, both better than the industry average of 192. Hyundai landed third overall, Kia eighth. The 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study tells a similar story: Hyundai scored 198 problems per 100 vehicles over three years, Kia 193, while the industry average sits at 204.
For context. Toyota managed 185 and Honda came in at 211. That means Hyundai and Kia are now in the same reliability conversation as the brands people trust most, especially in the critical early years of ownership.
The one lingering sore spot is resale value, which still trails Japanese competitors. Part of that comes from bigger dealer discounts and higher fleet sales when new. There’s also a cycle at play: lower resale prices attract budget-conscious buyers who may skip maintenance, leading to more horror stories.
That’s partly why Hyundai and Kia only extend the full 10-year warranty to the original owner or certified pre-owned buyers. Still, hot models like the Telluride and Palisade are already commanding markups in some markets. D. Power scores, the old safety-net image is giving way to something stronger: a warranty that’s now a badge of confidence, not just a backup plan.
