Hyundai and Kia Recall 14 Vehicles Over Fire Risk That Could Torch a Garage

Hyundai and Kia are facing a small but serious recall involving just 14 vehicles, but the potential stakes couldn't be higher. The issue centers on a manufacturing defect that could allow engine oil to leak onto hot exhaust components, creating a fire hazard severe enough to ignite a garage.

The automakers are moving quickly to contact owners, urging them to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are made.

The recall affects a narrow slice of the 2024 and 2025 model year lineup, including the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Telluride, and Kia Carnival. According to documents filed with federal safety regulators, the problem lies in improperly installed oil pressure switches. If the switch fails, oil can spray onto the exhaust manifold, which runs at temperatures high enough to cause a fire.

No injuries or crashes have been reported so far, but the companies are taking no chances.

Owners will receive free inspections and replacement parts, with dealerships already stocking the necessary components. The repair involves swapping out the faulty oil pressure switch and checking for any secondary damage. Hyundai and Kia advise that until the fix is applied, drivers should park their vehicles outside and keep them away from garages, carports, or any structure that could catch fire.

Notices are expected to go out by late February, and affected owners can check their vehicle identification numbers on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website for confirmation.
