Hummer EV Off-Road Review: High-Tech Tricks vs. Tight Trails

Hummer EV Off-Road Review: High-Tech Tricks vs. Tight Trails

The 2026 GMC Hummer EV boasts wild specs, massive ground clearance, a steep approach angle, and immense power, but its near-container-ship width creates real challenges on tight trails. After a week of testing, including time at a 75-acre off-road facility in the Hudson Valley, the verdict is clear: the Hummer's advanced tech is impressive, but it often solves problems the truck itself creates.

The test model was a 3X Pickup with three motors, the optional 24-module battery, and a Carbon Fiber Edition package that adds real carbon wheels and trim. That package, priced at $13,700, signals more showpiece than serious off-roader. The truck lacked the Extreme Off-Road Package, which would have added smaller wheels with more sidewall, locking differentials, skid plates, and rocker protection.

The standout features are the steering modes. CrabWalk lets the truck move diagonally at low speeds, while King Crab turns the rear wheels up to twice as much as the fronts for aggressive repositioning. Both worked as advertised, helping the massive vehicle squeeze through tight, tree-lined paths and climb a steep, loose ascent where it initially struggled for traction.

An Extract Mode also lifts the suspension another six inches for extra clearance on tough obstacles.

However, visibility is poor from the cab, with small windows and a bird's-eye camera that only shows what's immediately beside the truck. The author got stuck on a steep climb and had to rely on a spotter and CrabWalk to escape. While the tech is genuinely capable, the reviewer notes that a standard 4Runner handled the same obstacle without drama.

Ultimately, the Hummer EV is a toy for enthusiasts, like a Lamborghini that never sees a racetrack. It can wheel, but its capability is more about bragging rights than practical use. The as-tested price hit $131,770, and the reviewer admits they wouldn't buy one, but respects that it truly works despite its size.
