Honda’s 2026 Prelude Returns After 25 Years - And It’s a Hybrid With a Twist

Honda’s 2026 Prelude Returns After 25 Years - And It’s a Hybrid With a Twist

After a quarter-century hiatus, the Honda Prelude is back. And no, it’s not the VTEC screamer purists might expect. Instead, the 2026 Prelude is a sleek grand-touring coupe that leans hard into hybrid technology, but in a way that’s engineered for driving fun, not just fuel savings.

0-liter inline-four paired with a two-motor hybrid system that delivers 232 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 time just over six seconds. Curb weight? A respectable 3,261 pounds. EPA fuel economy clocks in at 46 mpg city, 41 highway, and 44 combined. And yes, there’s no traditional transmission, but you might not miss it.

The real party trick is S+ Shift, which simulates an eight-speed gearbox by precisely modulating the relationship between the electric motor and engine. It produces crisp, convincing shifts and a more prominent engine note than the standard Civic Hybrid. Combined with the Prelude’s dual-axis front suspension (borrowed from the Civic Type R), adaptive dampers, a thicker rear sway bar, and big Brembo brakes up front, the car feels genuinely playful on a twisty mountain road.

05 kWh battery runs low on uphill sections, power delivery can feel a bit sluggish. But a few corners of regenerative braking quickly top it off.

On a road trip from Los Angeles to Big Sur, the Prelude proved it’s more than just a canyon carver. Forward visibility is excellent, the seats are comfortable (if manually adjustable), and the ride stays composed across comfort, GT, and sport modes. Clearance is surprisingly good for rough rural roads and light gravel.

In mixed driving, 70 percent highway, 30 percent city, I averaged about 38 mpg without trying to conserve fuel. That’s shy of the EPA estimates, but still impressive for a car this athletic. At just over $43,000, the Prelude is pricier than a Civic Hybrid, but it offers a unique blend of style, economy, comfort, and genuine driving engagement.

If you were disappointed by the lack of a manual transmission, give S+ Shift a try. It’s a clever, fun alternative.
