Honda Recalls 325,000 Minivans for Rear Camera Glitch That Could Go Dark

Honda Recalls 325,000 Minivans for Rear Camera Glitch That Could Go Dark

Honda is pulling more than 325,000 Odyssey minivans back to dealerships after discovering a problem with the rearview camera system. The issue, which affects models from 2018 through 2023, can cause the camera display to fail when the vehicle is in reverse. That’s a major safety concern, since drivers rely on that screen to spot children, pets, or obstacles behind them.

The root of the trouble is a software bug in the audio display unit. When the van is started and then shifted into reverse quickly, the system sometimes won’t load the camera image in time. Honda says it has received over 1,700 warranty claims related to the glitch, though no crashes or injuries have been reported so far.

Owners will get a free software update at no cost, no hardware replacement needed.

Notifications will start hitting mailboxes in early March. In the meantime. Honda advises drivers to check their mirrors and look over their shoulder before backing up, just as they would in any vehicle. If you own an affected Odyssey, you can also call your local dealer to schedule the update now.

This recall is a reminder that even minor software hiccups can have big consequences, and Honda is moving fast to fix it.
