Honda Pulls the Plug on the Prologue EV After Tariffs and Tepid Sales

Honda has officially confirmed it will end production of the Prologue electric SUV after the 2026 model year, closing a brief two-year experiment that relied heavily on General Motors’ technology. The automaker notified dealers earlier today, marking the end of a partnership-driven strategy that was meant to quickly get an EV into American showrooms.
The Prologue’s demise is the latest in a wave of electric vehicle cancellations across the industry.
This year alone. 4, Kia’s Niro EV, Volvo’s EC40 and EX30, and even Tesla’s Model S and X have been discontinued. S. EV market is buckling under tariffs, the loss of federal tax credits, and a regulatory environment that’s shifting back toward gasoline engines. Honda sold more than 72,000 Prologues combined in 2024 and 2025, a respectable start, but sales in the first half of 2026 cratered to just 8,400 units, roughly half of the prior year’s pace.
S. content. That cost pressure, combined with vanishing purchase incentives, made the math impossible.
The Prologue was always a bridge vehicle. Honda’s way of getting an EV to market while it developed its own platform. GM built the Prologue and Acura ZDX using its Ultium battery architecture, but the partnership has frayed. GM has already moved beyond Ultium to next-generation technology, and the two companies quietly shelved plans to jointly develop affordable EVs three years ago.
Earlier this year, they wound down a shared hydrogen fuel-cell venture in Michigan. The ZDX was pulled last September; the Acura RSX EV was canceled in March before launch. The Prologue is the last domino. For GM, the Ramos Arizpe plant will now shift to building the Chevrolet Groove for Mexico and the Aveo for Latin American markets starting next year.
" For now. S. path points toward hybrids, efficient gas engines, and hydrogen, not another battery-electric crossover. The next Honda EV sold here, whenever it arrives, will almost certainly be built on Honda’s own terms.
