Honda and Acura Recall: Rust Risk in Salt-Belt States

Honda and Acura Recall: Rust Risk in Salt-Belt States

If you own a Honda Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline, or Acura MDX from certain model years, you’ll want to check for a new recall. Honda has announced that nearly 880,000 vehicles may have rear subframes that rust faster than normal—potentially leading to suspension failure and loss of control.

The problem affects vehicles sold in states that use road salt during snowy winters. That includes much of the Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic: from Maine to Virginia, and west to Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. If your car was originally sold or registered in one of these “salt-belt” areas, it’s at higher risk.

The issue comes down to a manufacturing flaw in the coating on the rear subframe. In simple terms, the paint can peel near the suspension mounting points, allowing road salt to eat into the metal. Over time, that metal can weaken and crack.

Honda will inspect the subframe and install a reinforcement kit at no cost. If the damage is already severe, they’ll replace the subframe. Notices go out July 7, but you can check your VIN now on the NHTSA website.

At Boca Auto Care, we’re happy to take a look under your Honda or Acura if you’re concerned—especially if you’re driving a car originally from up north.
