Honda Accord Reaches 15 Million Sales in America, Celebrates 50 Years on the Road

Honda is marking two big milestones this year: the Accord turns 50, and the company just sold its 15 millionth example in the United States. That 15 millionth car rolled off the lot and was quickly followed by number 15,000,001, both going to the same family. It’s a quiet but significant achievement for a sedan that has outlasted most of its rivals and remains a staple on American roads.

The Accord first appeared in 1976 as a three-door hatchback with a 68-horsepower engine and a two-speed semi-automatic transmission. By 1982, Honda began building Accords in Ohio, and that plant has produced over 13 million of the 15 million sold here. Over five decades, the Accord has seen 11 generations, with the latest refresh arriving for the 2026 model year.

5-liter turbo-four making 192 horsepower or a hybrid system producing 204 horsepower, with fuel economy ranging from 28 mpg combined for the gas version to 46 mpg for the hybrid.

The milestone cars went to sisters Andrea and Alondra in Southern California. Andrea, an insurance agent, replaced her 2017 Accord with a white Sport-L; Alondra drove home in a silver Sport-L Hybrid. Their father bought his first Accord in 1997, and the family says they’ve trusted the car for as long as they can remember.

S. over the last 50 years, and stories like this one show why: it keeps winning over drivers, generation after generation.
