Half a Million Subarus Recalled Over a Typo on a Sticker

Most recalls involve scary mechanical failures or electrical gremlins, but sometimes the problem is far less dramatic. Subaru just announced a recall covering 541,237 vehicles, and the culprit is a simple typo on a sticker. The labels inside the door frames, the ones listing tire pressure and weight limits, have an incorrect gross axle weight rating (GAWR).
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spotted the error and alerted Subaru, who then checked records dating back to 2003 to find every affected model.
The vast majority of recalled vehicles are the Subaru Ascent, with 384,407 examples from the 2019 through 2026 model years. Other models include the 2025-2026 Forester Hybrid (77,504 units), the regular 2025-2026 Forester (49,946 units), and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid (29,380 units).
While many drivers never look at these stickers, the information matters. An incorrect weight rating could lead to overloading, which might strain brakes, damage suspension parts, or cause tire blowouts. It’s a small detail with real safety implications.
The fix is refreshingly simple: Subaru is mailing corrected labels to owners, who can peel and stick them over the old ones. No trip to the dealership is required unless you’d rather have them do it for free. This isn’t the first seemingly minor recall we’ve seen, Ram recently recalled heavy-duty pickups because a speed limiter let them exceed their tire ratings, but this one might be the easiest to resolve.
Just watch your mailbox, then stick it on.
