GM and WeaveGrid Team Up to Cut EV Charging Costs at Home

GM and WeaveGrid Team Up to Cut EV Charging Costs at Home

General Motors is taking a new approach to help electric vehicle owners save money on their monthly energy bills. Through its GM Energy division, the automaker has announced a partnership with WeaveGrid, a software company specializing in grid management. The collaboration aims to give EV drivers easier access to managed charging programs and utility incentives that can lower the cost of powering their cars.

The idea is simple: instead of plugging in your EV whenever it's convenient, the system can automatically schedule charging during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lowest. By connecting to utility programs through WeaveGrid's platform, drivers can earn credits or pay reduced rates without having to manually adjust their schedules.

GM says this smart charging approach not only saves money but also helps reduce strain on the local power grid during high-demand periods.

For Boca drivers who are considering an EV or already own one, this could mean significant savings over time. The partnership builds on GM's broader strategy to make electric vehicles more affordable beyond the initial purchase price. As more utilities offer time-of-use rates and demand response programs, having a vehicle that can intelligently communicate with the grid becomes a valuable asset.

GM Energy plans to roll out access to these managed charging programs through the myChevrolet, myGMC, and myCadillac mobile apps.

While the announcement focuses on GM vehicles initially, the technology could eventually benefit other EV owners as well. WeaveGrid's software already works with several major utilities across the country. For now, the immediate takeaway is clear: charging your EV at home is about to get a little smarter and a lot cheaper.
