Gas Price Surge Fuels EV Comeback, But Recovery Is Uneven

Rising tensions in the Middle East have sent gas prices climbing, and American drivers are responding by flocking to electric vehicles, especially hybrids. After a slow winter and fall, the EV market posted a notable rebound in the second quarter of 2026, with sales jumping nearly 15 percent compared to the start of the year.
According to a new analysis from Cox Automotive, automakers are seeing their best numbers since the federal EV tax credit was eliminated last year. It’s not quite a return to pandemic-era highs, but the worst of the slump may finally be behind us.
Drivers bought roughly 247,000 EVs in Q2, according to Kelley Blue Book. 7 percent uptick from Q1. 5 percent compared to the same quarter last year, marking the third straight quarter of year-over-year declines. The silver lining is that the drop is slowing, Q2’s decline was far less severe than the 27 percent plunge in Q1 or the 36 percent cratering at the end of 2025.
The market is finding its footing, but it’s not out of the woods.
Tesla remains the big winner in this modest recovery, accounting for one in three new EVs sold in Q2. S. EV sales after a brutal 2025 that saw its market share dip below 40 percent. Chevy, with its Equinox and Blazer EVs, came in a distant second, followed by Hyundai and Cadillac.
Toyota and Subaru were standout performers: Toyota’s EV sales surged 225 percent year over year, and Subaru’s jumped 108 percent. S. EV sellers and is planning new models like a three-row Highlander SUV. Meanwhile, automakers that cut their electric offerings, like Ford, which killed the money-losing F-150 Lightning, saw sales drop 40 percent.
Volvo fell 41 percent. Mercedes plunged 58 percent, and Nissan cratered 88 percent.
High gas prices aren’t something to cheer about, and no one wants pain at the pump to be the main driver of greener choices. But the reality is that thousands of Americans swapping gas guzzlers for EVs is a win for the environment. As more affordable models hit the road, like the Rivian R2, Slate Truck, and Ford’s upcoming $30,000 EV, the hope is that momentum can hold, even in the face of policy headwinds.
