Ford's Latest Recall Targets 288,000 Explorers With Roof Rail Issue

Ford has issued its 57th recall of the year, this time pulling in 288,000 Explorer SUVs from the 2016 through 2019 model years. The problem: loose roof rails that could detach while driving, posing a hazard to both passengers and other motorists. The move comes as the automaker struggles to keep up with a mounting list of safety issues that have plagued its lineup throughout 2023.
According to documents filed with NHTSA, the affected vehicles may have roof rails that were not properly secured during assembly or in prior repair work. Ford says the rails can separate from the vehicle over time, especially in hot weather when adhesive bonds weaken. The company is aware of at least two reported incidents linked to the defect, though no injuries have been confirmed.
Notably, this recall includes vehicles that Ford had previously repaired under earlier service campaigns. That means some owners could be facing the same problem twice. Ford will notify affected owners starting next month and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the roof rail assemblies at no cost.
Owners can also check their vehicle's status using Ford's online recall lookup tool.
