Ford’s First Le Mans Prototype in 60 Years Hits the Track in New Shakedown Video

Ford’s First Le Mans Prototype in 60 Years Hits the Track in New Shakedown Video

Ford is gearing up for a return to the top tier of endurance racing, with its new LMDh prototype recently completing a test session at Paul Ricard in France. The still-unnamed car, which carries the legacy of the GT40 from six decades ago, is set to join the grid when the 2027 World Endurance Championship opens in Qatar in March.

4-liter V8 with a block loosely based on the Coyote engine, producing a deep, burbly tone that Ford showcased in newly released images and video. The car sits on an Oreca chassis, the same platform used by Genesis, Alpine, and Acura, though Acura is set to exit IMSA at the end of the 2026 season.

Two current Acura ARX-06 drivers, Tom Blomqvist and Nick Yelloly, will join Ford’s WEC effort next year alongside Matt Campbell. Logan Sargeant, Mike Rockenfeller, and Sebastian Priaulx will compete in a second entry. The shakedown took place on August 5, with Campbell and Sargeant scheduled to drive later that day.

Stylistically. Ford’s contender appears closer to the Genesis than the Alpine or Acura, featuring smoother bodywork and a flatter nose. The front end hints at a Porsche 963, while the rear fender’s upward kick near the wing nods to the Mustang. A subtle stripe and block-letter “FORD” along the lower profile reference the legendary GT40.

Whether Ford’s return to Le Mans’ top class will be immediately successful remains uncertain, endurance racing typically requires time for teams to find their pace. But one thing is clear from the video: it will sound excellent.
