Ford’s $5 Mistake: 2 Million Explorers Recalled Over Flimsy Trim Clip

Ford is calling back nearly 2 million Explorer SUVs to fix a tiny, five-dollar part that just wasn’t built to last. The issue centers on a plastic trim clip that holds the A-pillar covers in place — the same covers that run along the windshield pillars. When that clip fails, the trim can loosen or even fly off while driving, creating a hazard for the driver and others on the road.
The problem came to light after Ford received hundreds of complaints about trim pieces detaching at highway speeds. In a few cases, the loose parts struck other vehicles or caused drivers to swerve. The fix is simple: replace the clip with a sturdier version and add a retainer to keep everything secure.
But with 2 million vehicles involved — spanning model years 2011 through 2019 — the logistics alone are massive.
Dealers will perform the repair at no cost to owners, and Ford expects to begin notifying customers in March. For Boca Auto Care customers, this recall is a reminder that even a cheap plastic part can cause big problems. If you own an Explorer from those years, we recommend checking your VIN on Ford’s recall site or giving us a call.
We’ll handle the paperwork and get you scheduled — no fuss, no runaround.
