Ford’s 1964 Aurora Concept Nailed Future Car Tech Decades Early

Ford’s 1964 Aurora Concept Nailed Future Car Tech Decades Early

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how automakers build and market cars, but Ford took a nostalgic twist for National AI Day on July 16. Instead of hyping new driver-assist software, the company used AI filmmaking tools to reimagine the debut of its long-lost 1964 Aurora concept.

The result is a retro-style promotional video that shows what a 1960s ad for this futuristic wagon might have looked like, if Mad Men had access to modern AI. But the real surprise isn't the technology behind the video. It's how many of the Aurora's wild ideas actually made it into cars we drive today.

The Aurora was never meant for production. It belonged to Ford's "X-Cars" series, a lineup of pure concept vehicles designed to test new ideas. Decades later, many of those ideas are common. Before GPS existed, the Aurora had a basic navigation system. It also featured electrochromic glass, a roof that could switch from clear to opaque at the push of a button.

In 1964, that sounded like science fiction. Today, it's a luxury staple, found on cars like the Cadillac Celestiq. Inside. Ford envisioned a cabin that felt more like a living room, with multiple climate zones, a refrigerator, rear-seat entertainment, and lounge seating. Sound familiar?

That's the blueprint for many modern family haulers.

The Aurora stretched 227 inches long on a 131-inch wheelbase, bigger than Ford's current largest SUV, the extended Expedition Max. It even featured a steering yoke, a design that Tesla revived decades later with the Cybertruck. Not every prediction hit the mark, though. Ford imagined a dedicated children's playroom separated by a power glass partition, complete with its own radio and climate controls.

There were also glowing trim panels and rotating seats that never made it to production. But that's the point of concept cars: they let engineers test ideas that may take 50 years to become reality. In the Aurora's case. Ford's designers were simply ahead of their time.
