Ford Shows Dealers a Real Four-Door Mustang Mach 4, Starting Under $40,000

Ford has taken a major step toward bringing back a sedan by showing dealers an actual four-door Mustang prototype in Las Vegas. This is the first time the automaker has displayed a physical version of the Mach 4, following a rendering shown in 2024. Attendees compared its size and design to a Porsche Panamera, and Ford executives told the group that the car would start below $40,000, accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds, and offer more rear legroom than a Panamera.
The move signals Ford's renewed interest in passenger cars, a segment it largely abandoned. The Mustang is currently the only non-SUV, non-truck vehicle in Ford's North American lineup, but company leaders have softened their stance. Ford CEO Jim Farley has said the brand would expand the Mustang family if new versions kept the original's character and performance.
Reports suggest the Mach 4 will likely use an elongated version of the existing S650 platform, which is cheaper than developing a new one. The powertrain could mirror the Mustang's, including a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a 5.0-liter V8, with the possibility of a manual gearbox.
The four-door Mustang could reignite a rivalry with General Motors, which is reportedly working on a four-door Camaro revival, and it would directly compete with the Dodge Charger sedan. Ford has not set a debut date, but production could start between 2028 and 2029.
