Ford Recalls Over 288,000 Explorers After Roof Covers Risk Flying Off

Ford Recalls Over 288,000 Explorers After Roof Covers Risk Flying Off

S. after discovering that roof rail covers can loosen and detach while driving, turning into dangerous projectiles. The recall covers certain 2020 through 2024 model year Explorers, including both standard and police versions. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the plastic trim pieces along the roof rails may not be properly secured due to a manufacturing issue.

The problem stems from the covers not being fully adhered or clipped into place during assembly. Over time, wind and vibration can cause them to separate from the vehicle entirely. Ford says it has received at least 200 warranty claims and field reports related to the issue, though no crashes or injuries have been confirmed.

Owners may notice loose or missing trim pieces before a full detachment occurs.

Ford will notify affected owners starting March 31, 2025. Dealers will inspect the roof rail covers and, if needed, replace them with improved parts at no cost. Owners can also check their vehicle’s eligibility by visiting the NHTSA recall site or calling Ford’s customer service line.

If you drive a 2020-2024 Ford Explorer and haven’t heard from the dealer yet, it’s worth checking now, especially before a long highway trip.
