Ford Recalls Nearly 300,000 Explorers as Roof Rails Pose Safety Risk

Ford Recalls Nearly 300,000 Explorers as Roof Rails Pose Safety Risk

Ford has issued its 57th recall of the year, this time targeting approximately 288,000 Explorer SUVs due to a problem with loose roof rails. The issue, flagged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects certain 2020-2022 models and could allow the rails to detach while driving, increasing the risk of a crash or injury to pedestrians.

The defect stems from improperly installed trim clips that may fail to secure the roof rail covers. Over time, vibrations or wind pressure can cause the covers to loosen and potentially fly off the vehicle. Ford says it has received a handful of warranty claims and field reports related to the problem, though no accidents or injuries have been confirmed as of this writing.

Owners of affected Explorers will be notified starting next month, and dealers will replace the roof rail covers and clips free of charge. Ford continues to grapple with a high volume of recalls this year, with issues ranging from powertrain glitches to electrical faults. For now, drivers are advised to check their vehicle identification number on Ford’s recall website and schedule a repair if their SUV is included.
