Ford Recalls Nearly 290,000 Explorers Over Roof Trim That Could Fly Off While Driving

Ford Recalls Nearly 290,000 Explorers Over Roof Trim That Could Fly Off While Driving

S. after discovering that the roof trim on some models can detach and fly off at highway speeds. The issue, which poses a serious safety hazard to both occupants and other drivers, has prompted the automaker to act swiftly. The recall covers certain 2020 through 2023 model year Explorers.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from a weak adhesive bond between the roof rail covers and the vehicle body. Over time, wind and vibration can cause the trim to loosen and eventually separate. Ford says it has received 174 customer complaints, 10 field reports, and three warranty claims related to the defect, though no crashes or injuries have been reported so far.

Owners will be notified by mail starting April 7, and dealers will inspect the roof rail covers, applying a stronger adhesive to secure them. Repairs will be performed at no cost. If you own an affected Explorer, you can check your vehicle's VIN on Ford's recall website or NHTSA's recall page.

Until then, keep an eye on your roof trim, and if it looks loose, bring it in to your trusted mechanic right away.
