Ford recalls 741,000 vehicles after transmission defect can let cars roll away

S. over a transmission issue that can cause cars to roll even when shifted into park. The defect, tied to a faulty bushing in the rear axle, affects certain 2020-2023 models including the Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Lincoln Corsair. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem could lead to unintended movement, increasing crash risk.
The recall covers vehicles built between January 2020 and May 2023. According to Ford, a missing or improperly secured bushing can allow the transmission to shift out of park without the driver pressing the brake. This is not a software glitch—it is a physical component failure.
Ford has received four reports of property damage and one alleged injury linked to the flaw, though no crashes have been confirmed.
Dealers will inspect and replace the rear axle bushing free of charge, and Ford says parts are available now. Owners should receive notification letters starting March 31. In the meantime, Ford recommends using the parking brake every time you park.
