Ford Pulls Three Popular Models Over Parking Brake Glitch

Ford Pulls Three Popular Models Over Parking Brake Glitch

Ford has issued a recall covering nearly 300,000 of its most popular vehicles — the Expedition, Explorer, and F-150 — due to a problem with the parking pawl that could let the vehicle roll away even when the shifter says it’s in park. The defect involves a small metal piece inside the transmission that locks the drivetrain when parked.

If that part fails, the vehicle might not stay put, creating a serious safety risk.

The recall affects certain model years, including 2020-2023 Explorers, 2022-2023 Expeditions, and 2022-2023 F-150s. Ford says the issue stems from a manufacturing error in the parking pawl component. Drivers might notice the vehicle lurching slightly when shifting into park, or hear a clunking noise.

In some cases, the vehicle could roll after the driver exits. Ford is aware of a handful of reported incidents but no injuries so far.

Owners will get a letter in the mail starting next month, instructing them to bring their vehicle to a dealer for a free fix. The repair involves replacing the parking pawl assembly, a job that typically takes a couple of hours. In the meantime, Ford advises drivers to engage the parking brake every time they park — a good habit regardless.

If you own one of these models and haven’t heard from Ford yet, you can check your vehicle’s recall status online using the VIN.
