Ford Pulls Over 100,000 Mustangs for Steering Problem

Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting more than 100,000 Mustang coupes and convertibles, citing a potential steering issue that could increase the risk of a crash. The recall covers certain 2015 through 2017 model year vehicles equipped with specific steering components.
According to documents filed with federal safety regulators, the problem lies in the steering gear mounting bolts, which may loosen over time and cause a loss of steering control.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) first flagged the issue after receiving multiple consumer complaints about steering wheel vibration and unusual noises. Ford’s investigation revealed that the bolts could detach completely if left unaddressed, leading to a sudden inability to steer the vehicle.
While no crashes or injuries have been reported so far, the company is urging owners to schedule repairs immediately at authorized dealerships. The fix involves inspecting and replacing the steering gear mounting bolts at no cost to the customer.
Owners of affected Mustangs will receive notification letters starting next month. In the meantime, anyone who suspects a problem can check their vehicle’s VIN on the NHTSA’s recall website or contact Ford’s customer service hotline. This recall is the latest in a series of safety actions for the iconic pony car, which has been a top seller for Ford for decades.
For local drivers, Boca Auto Care recommends bringing in any Mustang that feels loose or makes clunking noises from the front end, better safe than sorry.
