Ford Pulls 288,000 Explorers Over Roof Rails That Might Fly Off

Ford Pulls 288,000 Explorers Over Roof Rails That Might Fly Off

Ford has issued a recall for more than 288,000 Explorer SUVs after discovering that plastic roof rail covers can loosen and detach while driving. The problem affects vehicles from the 2020 through 2023 model years, and the company says the loose parts could become a hazard for other drivers if they fall off on the road.

According to documents filed with federal safety regulators, the issue stems from a manufacturing defect that prevents the roof rail covers from staying firmly attached. Over time, vibration and wind can cause the covers to separate from the vehicle. Ford has received at least 14 reports of covers flying off at highway speeds, though no crashes or injuries have been linked to the problem so far.

Owners of affected Explorers will receive notification letters starting next month. Ford dealers will inspect the roof rail covers and, if necessary, replace them free of charge. The company is also offering a temporary fix involving adhesive for customers who want to address the issue immediately.

For more information, owners can visit Ford's recall website or contact their local dealership.
