Ford Maverick's Success Tied to Unlikely Buyers, Not Just Truck Fans

Ford Maverick's Success Tied to Unlikely Buyers, Not Just Truck Fans

The Ford Maverick's popularity has been anything but typical. After its late 2021 debut, demand was so strong that Ford paused orders, and concerns about keeping up with that demand stretched into 2023. 3% gain.

What makes the Maverick stand out is who's buying it. Early on, buyers aged 18 to 35 made up more than 25% of sales, about double the industry average for that group. Women accounted for a similar share. The 2022 model also earned Pickup Truck of the Year from the Hispanic Motor Press, hinting at appeal among Hispanic shoppers, though hard sales data on that front is scarce.

The Maverick also pulled in shoppers from other brands at an unusually high rate. By October 2022, over 80% of buyers came from outside Ford, and that figure was still 60% in Q3 2025. Between 70% and 80% of owners previously drove non-trucks, with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda Civic among the most common trade-ins.

4% of RAV4 owners typically stick with Toyota, per a 2025 LexisNexis report.

Affordability was the initial draw, the 2022 base model started at $21,490, though Ford raised that price by more than 25% over three years. The 2026 model lists at $27,145 before fees. Still, the Maverick's mix of low cost, versatility, fuel efficiency, and car-like handling resonated, especially given that 74% of Americans say new cars are unaffordable.

That said, the truck has faced over 40 NHTSA recall notices since launch.
