Ford Issues Recall for 290,000 Explorers Over Roof Trim That Could Detach While Driving

Ford Issues Recall for 290,000 Explorers Over Roof Trim That Could Detach While Driving

Ford has announced a recall affecting nearly 290,000 Explorer SUVs after discovering that roof trim pieces may loosen and fly off at highway speeds. The issue involves a plastic molding strip running along the roof rails, which can separate from the vehicle if adhesive fails over time.

This isn't just a cosmetic problem, a detached piece could become a hazard for other drivers on the road.

The recall covers certain 2020 through 2023 model year Explorers. Ford says the problem stems from a manufacturing issue where the trim was not properly bonded to the roof. In some cases, owners may notice the trim lifting or hear wind noise before it fully detaches. So far, the automaker is aware of at least 200 warranty claims and a handful of field reports related to the defect.

No injuries or crashes have been reported.

Ford will notify affected owners starting next month, and dealers will inspect the roof trim free of charge. If the trim is loose or missing, technicians will replace it and apply a stronger adhesive to prevent future separation. Owners with questions can contact Ford's customer service line or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to check if their vehicle is included.
