Ford Issues Recall for 288,000 Explorers Over Roof Trim That Could Detach While Driving

Ford Issues Recall for 288,000 Explorers Over Roof Trim That Could Detach While Driving

Ford has announced a recall affecting roughly 288,000 Explorer SUVs after discovering that the roof trim on some models can loosen and fly off during normal driving. The issue, which has been linked to at least two reported incidents, poses a potential hazard to other motorists and pedestrians.

The recall covers certain 2020 through 2023 model year Explorers, primarily those equipped with roof rails.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from a weak adhesive bond between the roof molding and the vehicle's body. Over time, wind pressure and vibration can cause the trim to separate, especially at highway speeds.

Ford says it has received a handful of warranty claims and field reports related to the defect, though no injuries have been reported as of this writing.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting next month. Dealers will inspect the roof trim and, if necessary, reattach it using a stronger adhesive or replace the molding entirely, at no cost to the customer. In the meantime. Ford advises owners to check their trim periodically and bring the vehicle in if they notice any looseness.

For more details, owners can visit Ford’s recall website or contact their local dealer.
