Ford Issues Recall for 288,000 Explorers as Roof Rails Risk Detaching on the Highway

Ford Issues Recall for 288,000 Explorers as Roof Rails Risk Detaching on the Highway

Ford has announced a recall affecting roughly 288,000 Explorer SUVs after discovering that the roof rails can come loose and potentially fly off while the vehicle is traveling at highway speeds. The issue, which has prompted the automaker to act, involves a gap between the roof rack and the vehicle's roof that may allow the rail covers to separate from the frame.

Drivers could suddenly lose a roof rail without warning, creating a hazard for both the Explorer's occupants and other motorists.

The recall covers certain 2020 through 2023 model year Ford Explorer vehicles. According to the company, the problem stems from a manufacturing defect where the roof rail covers were not properly attached during assembly. Over time, wind pressure and vibration can cause the covers to detach entirely.

Ford says it has received reports of at least one minor injury related to the issue, though no crashes have been linked to the defect so far.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Ford starting in late October. Dealerships will inspect the roof rails and, if necessary, replace the covers and apply a stronger adhesive to secure them. Repair costs will be covered by Ford. In the meantime, the company advises drivers to check their roof rails for any signs of looseness and to bring the vehicle in for service if they notice anything unusual.

For those who prefer a professional inspection, the team at Boca Auto Care is ready to assist with any recall-related concerns or general maintenance needs.
