Ford Issues Recall for 288,000 Explorer SUVs Over Roof Rail Cover Risk

Ford Issues Recall for 288,000 Explorer SUVs Over Roof Rail Cover Risk

Ford has announced a recall affecting more than 288,000 Explorer SUVs after discovering that roof rail covers may loosen and fly off while the vehicle is moving. The issue, which spans model years 2020 through 2023, poses a potential hazard to other drivers and could lead to crashes if the detached covers strike nearby vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) flagged the problem after receiving reports of covers separating at highway speeds.

The root cause appears to be a manufacturing issue with the clips that hold the roof rail covers in place. Over time, exposure to heat and sunlight can cause these clips to weaken and fail. In some cases, drivers have reported hearing wind noise or noticing a gap between the cover and the roof before the part comes loose.

Ford says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the defect, but the recall is a proactive step to prevent potential road hazards.

Owners of affected Explorers will receive notification letters starting in early April. Dealers will inspect the roof rail covers and, if necessary, replace them with upgraded clips that better resist heat and wear. The repair will be performed at no cost to customers. In the meantime, Ford advises anyone who notices a loose or rattling roof rail cover to contact their local dealership for an immediate inspection.

For more details, owners can visit the NHTSA recall page or call Ford’s customer service line.
