Ford Issues Recall for 2016-2019 Explorers: Roof Rails Could Detach While Driving

Ford has announced a recall affecting certain 2016 through 2019 Explorer models due to a safety issue involving roof rail panels that may separate from the vehicle while in motion. The problem stems from a manufacturing defect where the roof rail covers can loosen over time, potentially flying off and creating a hazard for other drivers on the road.
S. are being notified.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue has already led to at least 14 reports of roof rails detaching at highway speeds, though no injuries have been reported so far. The affected vehicles were built at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant between September 2015 and January 2019.
Dealers will inspect the roof rail covers and, if necessary, replace them with improved parts that are better secured.
If you own one of these Explorers, you can expect a letter from Ford starting April 7, 2025. In the meantime, drivers should watch for any signs of loose trim or unusual wind noise from the roof area.
