Ford Issues Massive Recall Affecting Over 740,000 Vehicles - Here’s What’s Wrong

Ford Motor Company has announced a recall covering more than 740,000 vehicles across several popular models, citing a defect that could cause rearview camera displays to go dark while the car is in reverse. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a faulty rearview camera module that may fail due to water intrusion or electrical interference.
The recall, assigned NHTSA campaign number 24V-XXX, affects certain 2021-2023 model year Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, among others.
Affected owners can expect dealerships to replace the rearview camera module free of charge. Ford’s recall notice, posted on its official website, says the fix involves updating the image processing software and, if necessary, installing a new camera unit. The company has not reported any crashes or injuries linked to the defect, but notes that a non-functioning backup camera increases the risk of a collision while reversing.

This latest action follows a string of similar recalls from Ford this year, including one in February for brake hose ruptures affecting over 400,000 trucks. The NHTSA has urged all owners to respond promptly. Ford will begin notifying customers by mail starting late May, and repairs are expected to take about one hour.
For now, drivers are advised to use their mirrors and look over their shoulder when backing up until the fix is applied.
