Ford Faces Massive Rollaway Risk, Fix Delayed Until 2024

Ford Faces Massive Rollaway Risk, Fix Delayed Until 2024

Ford Motor Company is grappling with a safety issue affecting approximately 750,000 vehicles that could unexpectedly roll away after drivers exit. The problem, which spans multiple models including the popular F-Series trucks and SUVs, stems from a potential failure in the transmission’s parking pawl mechanism.

Unlike many recalls where a quick dealer visit resolves the issue, Ford has confirmed that a permanent repair won’t be available until early next year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation earlier this year after receiving dozens of complaints from owners who reported their vehicles moving after being parked. In some cases, the cars rolled into ditches, trees, or other parked cars. Ford has acknowledged the defect but says the necessary parts and engineering solutions are still in development.

In the meantime, the company is advising drivers to always engage the parking brake and ensure the vehicle is in park before exiting.

This is not the first major recall for Ford in recent months. The automaker has faced several high-profile safety campaigns, including issues with engine fires and rear suspension failures. For owners of the affected vehicles, the wait for a fix could be frustrating, especially in colder months when parking brakes may freeze.

Ford says it will notify owners by mail once the repair is available and that all work will be performed at no cost. Until then, drivers are urged to follow the interim safety steps to prevent accidents.
