Ford F-150 Engine Showdown: V6 vs. V8 - What’s Right for You in 2026?

Ford F-150 Engine Showdown: V6 vs. V8 - What’s Right for You in 2026?

If you’re shopping for a 2026 Ford F-150, you’ve got a big decision to make: six cylinders or eight? 0-liter Coyote V8 brings that classic rumble and natural power delivery. But the V8 comes at a price, sometimes as high as $2,595 on lower trims, and it’s not always the clear winner.

Here’s how the lineup stacks up for Boca drivers.

7-liter EcoBoost V6. It pumps out 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, gets 20 MPG combined in 4x4 models, and can tow up to 8,400 pounds. It’s smooth, quiet, and plenty capable for daily driving and light hauling. 0-liter Coyote V8, and you’re paying $2,595 extra on XLT and lower trims.

For that, you get 400 horsepower, 410 lb-ft of torque, and a massive towing boost to 13,000 pounds. Fuel economy dips just 1 MPG to 19 combined, costing about $150 more per year, roughly $13 a month. The V8 sounds fantastic and revs freely, but it gives up low-end responsiveness to the turbo V6s.

5-liter EcoBoost V6, the torque king. It makes 382 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, tows up to 13,500 pounds, and feels effortless under load. On higher trims like Lariat and Tremor, the V8 upgrade drops to just $375, but you’ll lose 90 lb-ft of torque and 700 pounds of towing capacity.

Many buyers see that as a downgrade. On King Ranch and Platinum models, the V8 isn’t even offered. Ford clearly expects those owners to stick with the latest turbo tech. At the end of the day, fuel costs are nearly identical across the three gas engines, so your choice comes down to character.

Want a quiet, torquey workhorse? Go EcoBoost. Crave the sound and feel of a V8? The Coyote won’t disappoint. Either way, every F-150 comes with a 10-speed automatic and runs on regular gas.
