Ford Adds Remote Engine Killswitch to Most New Models via App

Ford Adds Remote Engine Killswitch to Most New Models via App

As cars get smarter, the threats against them are getting more sophisticated. Between concerns over digital surveillance and thieves who can snatch a vehicle in under a minute, today’s drivers face risks that barely existed five years ago. Ford is responding with a straightforward tool built into its Ford Pass app: a remote engine start inhibitor that lets owners stop their car from starting, even if the keys are inside.

The feature is part of the Ford Security Package, previously available on select 2024 and newer F-Series trucks. Now Ford is rolling it out across more of its lineup, including the 2026 Expedition, 2026 Bronco Sport, and 2026 Mustang Mach-E. Using it is as simple as opening the Ford Pass app, tapping the “Monitoring” section, and swiping a slider to activate the killswitch.

No extra hardware or third-party apps required.

This factory-backed system has clear advantages over aftermarket solutions. Dealers are less likely to balk at warranty claims, and there’s no need to tap into the vehicle’s computers or rely on an outside app. It also addresses a potential weak spot in Ford’s popular SecuriCode keyless entry system: if a key is locked inside and someone gets the door code, they could drive off.

With the killswitch enabled, the engine won’t start without the owner’s phone or a deactivation code from the app. If cell service is spotty, users can simply enter that code to get moving.

The security package also includes stolen vehicle tracking, and owners can add a Ford truck bed camera to monitor cargo. Notably, the F-150 Lightning is left out of this update for reasons Ford hasn’t explained. But for anyone driving a new F-150, Super Duty, Expedition, Bronco Sport, or Mustang Mach-E who has dealt with theft before, this is a welcome layer of protection.
