Five Overlooked Classic Cars That Are Finally Getting Their Due

Five Overlooked Classic Cars That Are Finally Getting Their Due

The classic car world has a habit of showering attention on the same few models, driving their values through the roof. But while everyone’s chasing the usual suspects, a handful of genuinely interesting machines have been quietly biding their time in the shadows. Now, collectors and enthusiasts are starting to wake up to these overlooked gems.

Here are five of the coolest, spanning sports cars, a quirky sedan, and a car that was decades ahead of its time.

Take the Porsche 924, for instance. Often dismissed by purists for its front-engine layout and Volkswagen-derived roots, this car was actually a joint venture between Porsche and VW. 0-liter four-cylinder based on a van engine, while later turbo versions and the 924S got Porsche’s own powerplant.

Today, you can snag a base 924 for around $10,000, while the rare Turbo averages about $25,600. It’s a rear-wheel-drive sports car that’s easier and safer to drive than a classic 911, and it’s finally getting the respect it deserves. Then there’s the Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia, a car that won’t win any drag races but wins hearts with its timeless Italian-designed body.

Built on Beetle mechanicals, it’s cheap and simple to maintain, with an average used value just under $22,000. Some examples can still be found for around $10,000.

Across the Atlantic, the Rover SD1 was a standout from the troubled British Leyland era, especially in V8-powered 3500 form. S. with plastic bumpers and round headlights, it’s now a bargain at roughly $18,850, and since the youngest examples are nearly 40 years old, they’re freely importable.

The Toyota Celica Supra A60 is another hidden star. 8-liter inline-six, a manual gearbox, and prices around $18,355. Finally, the AMC Eagle predicted the crossover craze by a full decade. With standard four-wheel drive and a rugged inline-six, it’s a quirky, historically important SUV that averages just $12,138.

These cars prove that sometimes the best finds are the ones nobody’s talking about yet.
