First Drive: 2027 Genesis GV60 Magma Proves It's More Than a Fancy Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

Genesis is pushing beyond its usual luxury lineup with the new Magma performance sub-brand, and the first model to reach most of the world is the all-electric GV60 Magma. While the brand has big plans—including a mid-engine sports car aimed at the Porsche 911—it starts here, with a dual-motor crossover that shares its bones with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT.

4 seconds. But Genesis is betting that buyers want something more than just raw speed.

We drove a Korean-spec GV60 Magma on public roads near Genesis's home base, and the standout quality is how it balances fun and comfort. In its most aggressive GT and Sprint modes, it feels eager and sharp, with crisp steering and a willing chassis that hides its nearly 5,000-pound curb weight.

The artificial transmission simulation—complete with fake shifts and a digital tachometer—is as convincing as ever. But switch to Comfort mode, and the Magma transforms into a genuinely plush cruiser, soaking up bumps without the constant reminder that you're in a performance car.

That's something neither the Ioniq 5 N nor the EV6 GT can claim.

Inside, the cabin gets a dark makeover with suede, contrast stitching, and supportive seats that are less aggressive than the ones in its corporate siblings. But there are compromises: no lumbar adjustment, no massaging seats, and more hard plastic than you'd expect from a luxury brand.

The 27-inch OLED screen is sharp and responsive, and the dedicated climate controls with physical buttons are a welcome touch. Range is estimated at around 230 miles, which trails some rivals, but 250-kW DC fast charging means you can go from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but expect the GV60 Magma to slot somewhere between the $66,000 Ioniq 5 N and the $78,000 Cadillac Lyriq-V. If it lands in that sweet spot, it could be the most well-rounded choice for anyone wanting an electric performance crossover that doesn't sacrifice daily comfort.

The Magma isn't perfect—the interior could be plusher, and the range is just okay—but it carves out a distinct personality from its relatives. And in a segment with few direct competitors, that alone makes it worth a close look.
